The wentletrap gets its name from the Dutch word for winding staircase — wenteltrap. Look at one closely and you can see why. The shell rises in a precise spiral of ridged steps, each whorl separated from the next, a staircase built by something that had no plan and no tools except time.
There is something quietly arresting about the things nature makes without effort. The shell doesn't know it's beautiful. It simply grew according to its own logic, one chamber at a time, and ended up this.
This original painting is made in oil on canvas, small enough to hold in one hand but with the kind of presence that fills a room quietly. It belongs anywhere a carefully observed thing is welcome: on a shelf, above a desk, or on the wall of a room where you do your best thinking.
