Porthole is a contemplative piece from Lance Hewison’s Into the Blue series, offering viewers a glimpse of the sea through the circular frame of a ship’s porthole. The viewer is placed in a moment of pause, as though observing the vast, untamed sea from the safety of the vessel. The light plays across the water, creating ripples that add a sense of movement to the otherwise still scene, echoing the ongoing journey of both the ship and the observer.

There’s a duality here—being close to the sea but also separated from it, safe within the vessel yet yearning to be part of that expanse. I think we all experience that tension between where we are and where we want to be. This painting is about finding peace in that moment of reflection, even if the journey is far from over.
